Most of Deception Bay's old farmland was subdivided for housing, so the suburb is a mix of homes built over several decades, from older fibro and brick near the foreshore to newer estates on the western side towards the highway. Some larger blocks remain in between. The Redcliffe peninsula is about eleven kilometres away and Brisbane about 37.
Being on the bay means salt air on outdoor hot water units and fittings, low ground near the foreshore where stormwater has to be piped away, and older drains in the established streets that roots have found. Newer estates have PVC drains and the usual mix of electric, gas and heat pump hot water.
