How the plumbing fits the renovation
A bathroom renovation involves several trades, and the plumbing has to be there at the right two stages.
- Discuss the layout and what you want to change
- Assess what can stay and what should be replaced while it is open
- Set out fixture positions, water and drainage before anything is ordered
- Rough-in ready for the waterproofer and tiler
- Return for fit-off once finishes are complete
- Test everything and hand over
Plan the plumbing before the room comes apart
Moving a shower, a toilet or a vanity changes more than the visible fittings. Supply lines move, waste pipes move, and the drainage still has to fall correctly to the sewer. Involving the plumber early tells you what is practical before tiles, cabinetry and fixtures are ordered.
We also check the fittings you have chosen against the plumbing behind them. Not every wall-hung toilet, freestanding bath or wall mixer suits every bathroom, and finding that out at fit-off is expensive.
Waterproofing is done by a licensed waterproofer between our rough-in and fit-off. A shower that leaks after a renovation is nearly always a membrane or a seal, and both are covered on the leaking shower page.

When should the plumber see the bathroom?
Before anything is ordered and before demolition. A look at the existing drainage and pipework decides what layout is practical and what it will cost.
Can a toilet be moved to another wall?
Often, but the waste has to reach the sewer with proper fall, and on a slab that means cutting the floor. We tell you what your floor allows before you decide.
Do you do the waterproofing and tiling?
No. Those are separate licensed trades. We do the plumbing rough-in before them and the fit-off after, and coordinate the timing.
Can you replace the old pipes while the bathroom is open?
Yes, and it is the cheapest time to do it. Galvanised pipe and old wastes are replaced while the walls are open rather than after the new tiles are on.
