Clontarf plumbing, an 1880s estate rebuilt many times
Allotments in Clontarf were first auctioned in 1881 and 1882, when the promoters promised a steam ferry to Sandgate and a city that was coming soon. The city came slowly, so Clontarf has layers: a few very old homes, a lot of post-war brick, unit blocks along the waterfront and townhouses squeezed in wherever a large block was split. About 8,500 people live here now.
Each layer has its own plumbing. The oldest homes can still have galvanised supply pipe and earthenware drains; the post-war brick homes are on their second or third electric tank; the unit blocks have shared stacks and plant rooms owned by a body corporate; the townhouses have modern PVC drains and compact hot water cupboards.
